A woolly bear caterpillar

Byram, New Jersey

He is looking for a spot under bark or inside cavities of rocks or logs for overwintering. That's why we see so many of them crossing roads and sidewalks in the fall. The banded woolly bear is the larval form of the Isabella tiger moth, Pyrrharctia isabella.
