Fog Cavern

near Reutlingen, Germany view map

We visited the Fog Cavern (Nebelhoehle) located a short distance from Schloss Lichtenstein. This is an amazing cave first mentioned in 1486. More parts were discovered in 1517. In 1803 it was finally developed and opened to visitors. In 1924 electric lights were installed. Before that torches and oil lamps were used and the soot coated many of the stalactites and stalagmites.
The cave is about a mile long and can reach a height of more than 60 ft. in a few spots. There are 5 chambers with interesting formations.
