Lovely weed called Joe Pye or Jopi

Byram NJ, USA

Over 6 feet tall - very impressive planting in the house garden at Kittatinny State Park ranger station.
The plant is named for Joe Pye (or Jopi), who, according to folklore, was a traveling Native American medicine man. He lived in New England around the time of the American Revolution and may have been from a tribe in Maine. He sold various herbal remedies to the colonists and apparently treated typhoid fever with the plant that bears his name to this day.
Like others in this genus, 'Gateway' is no exception in it's power to attract butterflies with its huge bright mauve pink flowers clusters atop deep wine red stems. More compact and shorter than others in this species. July to September bloom makes 'Gateway' a bold and dramatic display when planted with Rudbeckia 'Autumn Sun' or tall ornamental grasses. Outrageous!
Flowers are very attractive to butterflies. Flowers give way to attractive seed heads, which persist well into winter.
