Myself: Self Portraits

When I started doing this, I never imagined that over two years later I would still be taking self portraits - and still finding it interesting. I think of it as an exercise in self exploration and discovery, and I have learned a lot doing it. Plus, my skills with the camera have improved. It is harder than it looks, especially as I just use a timer, not a remote release. These were all taken with a Sigma SD10.

Thank you for the comments and the votes. But I still stand by my original statement that my landscape photos of Alberta, in my other galleries, are much more beautiful!

Ms Lorinda---I have afew questions. Firstly, what kind of camera areyou using, and have you ever taken any type of photography classes? secondly- If allowed to- can or do you develop your own pictures? How long do you set your camer's timer for? Are your expressions fairly spontaneous or do you need a lot of time to "compose" yourself?

Hehehe, not surprising. When you find yourself such a perfect and stunningly beautiful model. Who would want to photograph anyone else... No matter how much more beautiful you find Alberta, to me the lady in these pictures beats any landscape. Any another comment and vote are added to the long list of predecessors who have all already said what I wanted to express when I initially discovered this gallery.

Excellent Composition, vivid colors. I wonder though, if an indirect light source would eliminate the "whitewashiness/burnout " many prints are subjected to. My hat is off though to a beautiful woman, and exceptional pictures. Hands down #1 favorite is pic 198.

Gina, Great job for a very difficult project... self-portraiture. The "wash-out" or over-exposure effect takes some time to get used to. Btw, you're also very photogenic. I enjoy the gallery very much. Thanks.

I think this is a very good gallery of something that is very difficult to do. I personally feel alot safer behind the camera than in front of it :P. I'm kinda wondering though what you'd be able to achieve by taking some outdoor self portraits, I think shooting outdoors could open up a few more creative possibilities.

Every picture from 135 onwards 'was' taken with natural light, at various times of day - and nothing else.

Now that I read some of the other comments, I agree, some natural light would make for some interesting photos. Maybe try parial covering with a bed sheet? Nice work, softer is better for you than the "hard looks".

I like "one" and "color" One is the best I think. Color is too soft. I agree with others that the pictures are a little over exposed. Maybe a darker background would help also?

I believe your subject matter is more intriguing than your photographs. Don't get me wrong, your style is good, but I doubt that if the subject matter was me, for instance, the response would be quite as strong and favorable. If you wanna try this experiment...i'd gladly pose for you.

the bleached look from the light is excessive, maybe you wanted the effect but your beauty was washed out in the attempt. It is there but left too much to the imagination rather than using light to accent the positive you have used it in an artistic, though I think negative , way.

hi Gina, I like your SP's, you have some nice exposures, compositions, and of course a lovly subject matter! ;) As a casual observer, the only constructive criticism I might add, is that there is an awful lot of fairly similar shots here. Whilst most of them work on their own, and in their own right, as a body, it feels a little bit like repetition – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing apart from if it then stops people viewing all the images and missing out on the strongest ones. I am probably really bad at this, I end up deleting things willy-nilly, but I always ask myself how much it add’s to keep something in, and whether it’s just saying something that another stronger image has already said. If this was my gallery I would be inclined to choose one or maybe two in some cases of each different out fit and pose etc of the very strongest compositions and exposures. So there is a tight, strong collection and people are sent straight to the gold. That’s my humble opinion anyway, Nice work, Nick

Number 11 is, IMO, outstanding. Looking at only one though seems to be a mistake, when taken in context your subtle shifts in "look" and "personality" are really telling a fun and interesting story.

Your landscapes are indeed beautiful, but Alberta has existed for centuries. You have certainly come a long way in so few years. There is a look of mischief in most of your shots. I enjoyed them all but there was something extra I felt for four and eleven. The overexposure is intentional in most (and I am aware of it); just experimenting at the moment - and working with less than ideal conditions, in terms of lighting and setup.

pics are overexposed and the direct flash is harsh. why don't you use natural light instead? stand next to a window for example.
