Trevor Gordon Stanford Paine: After a brave and gallant battle with cancer, Trevor passed into the hands of God, peacefully at home, on November 18, 2014, in the presence of his beloved wife of 63 years, Yolanda (Bobby),and children. He is pre-deceased by his father Kenneth, his mother Barbara, his brother Patrick, his sister-inlaw Patricia White and his treasured granddaughter Katherine. Trevor is survived by his wife Yolanda, and his four children Peter, Gillian (Alain), Mark and Brenda (Marc). He will be lovingly remembered as a special Grandig/Gang-Gang by his grandchildren Stephen, Sarah, Emily and Robyn and his four great-grandchildren Olive, William, Masatoshi and Yoko.
Trevor was born in India and joined the Indian Air Force and upon his graduation from high school at the age of 17. He immediately trained for his commission as an Officer and shortly thereafter received his wings as a Pilot. He was part of the IAF team that extracted the Dalai Lama to freedom and always spoke modestly about his actions and meeting the young spiritual leader. During reconnaissance flights in Northern India, flying a DC3 and equipped with a simple box Brownie camera, he also warned of external threats to the area by providing evidence of the build up of troops and supply lines. Trevor had many stories to tell of his exploits as a pilot and his travels across the world at the helm of the controls. Following in the footsteps of his father, he was also a Mason with Golconda Lodge (EC), India.
After his career in the Indian Air Force, the family moved to England in 1960 where Trevor continued his love of aviation by moving from the cockpit to the control tower - as an Air Traffic Controller in 1961 at Gatwick airport and then at Heathrow airport in London. He was a proud member of the guild of the guardians of the sky, making sure that aircraft and passengers transited safely and were handed off across the air waves to a safe landing at their destination.
Moving to Canada in 1967, Trevor joined the Civilian Aviation Branch of the Federal Department of Transport and worked in the control tower at Malton International Airport. In July 1970, he progressed on to the Transportation Headquarters in Ottawa assuming roles of increasing responsibility and influence over air traffic safety. It was in Ottawa that he and Bobby finally settled and were able to put down roots. He played a significant role in the modernization of Canada's air traffic control systems, both civilian and military, in addition to assisting in the development of collision avoidance systems. Air travelers today are unknowingly indebted to his vision and efforts.
A world-renowned expert in Air Traffic Control, Trevor chaired many International Civil Aviation Organization committees and was actively sought out by industry and countries alike, for his advice. He was actively engaged with Air Traffic Control upgrades through his consulting efforts to Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Jamaica and with BARCO, Solacom and Harris Systems. Even up to his last few days, he was still offering advice to his clients.
Trevor was respected by many for his steadfastness and no nonsense approach to work and life, something that he has passed along to his children. He was proud of all he accomplished in his passion for aviation and, as a Pilot, was able to approach air traffic control from the standpoint of the one with the stick in their hand. Trevor will be lovingly remembered as a man of indefatigable strength and devotion and will be sorely missed by his family, friends and business associates around the world.
The family would like to thank Dr. David MacMillan and Zelda of Activecare Medical Clinics and the entire palliative care team led by Dr. Lisa Cross for their immeasurable support and compassion through a very trying time. In memory of Trevor, donations can be made to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
Friends are invited to a Celebration of Trevor's Life at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave., Ottawa, on Monday, November 24, from 2-5 p.m. Condolences/Tributes/Donations at mcgarryfamily.ca 613-728-1761 http://www.obitsforlife.com/obituary/1004468/Paine-Trevor.php
from Moe Vyas: ... We knew Trevor well for the past three decades. It was always great fun meeting him and that we did many, many times either at his home, or ours or restaurants. He was indeed a man from whom you learnt lot about life and yes about many aspects of air traffic management. He will remain an unforgettable character in our minds for ever.
