The Rhondda Valleys were world famous for their high quality coal. In the valley below are the villages of Tylorstown, Stanleytown and Wattstown, all named after coal owners. In 1896 an explosion at the Tylorstown Colliery kills 57. The National Colliery at Wattstown suffered an explosion in 1905 in which 119 miners lost their lives. The mound at the top of the image is known as Tylorstown Tip, it's top third having been removed after the Aberfan Disaster. It is part of a large tip complex which stretches to the foreground from which the image was taken.
