Originally a wooden motte and bailey Norman castle and fortified with stone in the mid 13th century after attacks by the native Welsh. Captured and partially destoyed by Owain Glyndwr's forces in 1404 when the nearby town of Abergavenny was razed during the rebellion against English rule.
