Conquest and Revolution.

Conquest is a reference to the English and Norman wars of conquest in Wales. The two pinnacles on the top of the image are the remains of the English Morlais Castle. Building work was started by Gilbert de Clare, 3rd Earl of Gloucester to protect the northern border of his 'lands', de Clare was responsible for the building of the impressive Caerphilly Castle. The castle was captured by the Welsh lord Madoc ap Llewelyn in 1294. The castle was never fully finished and quickly fell into disrepair with little of the structure left today.

Revolution refers to the part that South Wales and in particular the iron works of Merthyr Tydfil played in the Industrial Revolution. The quarries are the Morlais Castle quarries associated with the Dowlais and Penydarren Ironworks.
