Built by architect Richard Burgess for the Third Marquess of Bute and financed from his riches through the port of Cardiff and royalties of the lucrative South Wales coalfield making him one of the richest men in the world. It was built on top of the original stone medieval castle serving the ruthless Marcher Lord Gilbert de Clare.
