Xi'an (Chinese: 西安;), is the capital of Shaanxi province in China and a sub-provincial city. As one of the most important cities in Chinese history, Xi'an is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China for it has been the capital of 13 dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, and the Tang. Xi'an is also renowned for being the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and for the location of the Terracotta Army from Qin Dynasty. The city has more than 3,100 years of history. It was called Chang'an (Traditional Chinese: 長安; Simplified Chinese: 长安; literally "Perpetual Peace") in ancient times. (Wikipedia)

You are allowed to take pictures, but some of the Terra Cottas are behind the glass, flash is not an option to photograph those TCs.

can tourists take pitures of the terra cotta warriors..?? I thought that it was prohibited/?

Dear Richard:
I was in China in December and really enjoyed your photos. I saw a mural at Da Ci'en temple and wanted more info on it. The mural was about the birth and struggle of someone, it went around the room and was vivid and powerful. If you have any info on this please contact me.

Dave, thanks for your kind words. Yes, IS is very useful for taking pictures of Terra Cotta Warriors. The interior of the pits are rather dark. Some of the better TC warriors are displayed behind the glass, so flash is not an option.

Richard - very nice images! We are going to China this summer and I was wondering how the lighting was for imaging the Terra Cotta Warriors. From your photos, it looks as thought IS lenses are a must! If you are shooting at ISO 1600. So I am thinking of getting the Canon 24-135 IS or the 17-85 IS. I already have the Canon 17-40 zoom. Any advice? Thanks!
