This impressive towering obelisk in the Plaza de la Merced was built to commemorate General Jose Maria Torrijos.
He was executed along with 48 of his men when he started a rebellion against Ferdinand VII in the 19th century.
The remains of the general and his soldiers are in the crypt at the base of the monument.
