<>Keukenhof also known as the Garden of Europe is situated near Lisse, Netherlands, and is the world's largest flower garden. According to the official website for the Keukenhof Park, approximately 7,000,000 (seven million) flower bulbs are planted annually in the park. Keukenhof is located in South Holland in the small town of Lisse, south of Haarlem and southwest of Amsterdam.
It is accessible by bus from the train stations of Haarlem, Leiden and Schiphol. It is located in an area called the "Dune and Bulb Region" (Duin- en Bollenstreek).
The garden was instigated in 1949 by the then-mayor of Lisse. The idea was to present a flower exhibit where growers from all over the Netherlands and Europe could show off their hybrids – and help the Netherlands export industry (it is the world's largest exporter of flowers). De Keukenhof is een bekend bloemenpark ten noordwesten van Lisse. Het trekt jaarlijks ongeveer 900.000 bezoekers uit de hele wereld.
Op het 32 hectare grote park worden jaarlijks in het voorjaar (eind maart t/m eind mei) bolgewassen van bedrijven uit de omgeving tentoongesteld.
In de vijftiende eeuw was het park een deel van het Kasteel Keukenhof en diende als tuin voor gravin Jacoba van Beieren die op het dichtbij gelegen Slot Teylingen woonde.
Zij haalde hier ingrediënten voor in de keuken, waar de Keukenhof zijn naam aan dankt. In 1840 werd het park heringericht door de tuinarchitecten Zocher en Zn., die later ook het Vondelpark in Amsterdam ontwierpen.
In 1949 werd het noordelijke deel van het landgoed tot bloemententoonstelling ingericht, op initiatief van de toenmalige burgemeester van Lisse, W.J.H. Lambooy en een tiental vooraanstaande bloembollenkwekers. De opening vond plaats in 1950. (Bron: Wikipedia)
