The horseman is the wellknown 15th century philosopher Desiderius Erasmus, born in Rotterdam and died in Basel (Switzerland). These two cities connected by the River Rhine are depicted in this Mosaic. The name of Basel is temporarily covered by a wooden fence due to the reconstruction of the building. The building was erected 1951 by order of the Basler Insurance Company.
