Nicole:

It is a golden head covering, usually larger and covering more of the woman's head in the Frisian costume than in those of the other provinces. I believe they were both for ornament and to hold the lace covering on top of the gold helmet and black under-cap.

In Fryske, it is called an "earizer", while in Dutch, it is called an "oorijzer". Both roughly translate to "ear iron".

Could you tell me what the ornaments on her head cap are called. These are the same ones my great grandmother has in a picture I have of her. do they have significance? She passed away in Steenivijk in 1903.
Thank-you,
Nicole
