Beth Haim - The House of Life - is one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in the Netherlands.
In 1614 the Portuguese-Jewish Community of Amsterdam purchased a plot of land at Ouderkerk aan de Amstel,
a village close to Amsterdam, to be used as a burial place for their dead. The site was extended by
further purchases up to four hectares in size. Approxemately 27.500 people found their last resting place here.
Beth Haim is not only a place of historical interest, but it is also a cultural treasure, because
of its many beautifully sculptured marble tombstones which are all placed horizontally on the graves.

Beth Haim - Het Huis des Levens - is één van de oudste Joodse begraafplaatsen in Nederland.
In 1614 werd door de Porugees-Joodse Gemeente van Amsterdam een stuk grond aangekocht
in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel om als begraafplaats in gebruik te nemen.
In de loop van de 17e eeuw werd de begraafplaats uitgebreid door nieuwe grondaankopen.
In totaal is Beth Haim nu meer dan vier hectaren groot.
Ongeveer 27.500 mensen vonden hier hun laatste rustplaats.
Beth Haim is van grote cultuur-historische waarde door de vele prachtig bewerkte
marmeren grafstenen, die allemaal horizontaal op de graven zijn geplaatst.
