Wat Suthat Thepwararam Ratchaworamahawiharn, วัดสุทัศน์เทพวรารามราชวรมหาวิหาร, was founded by King Rama I in the central area of Bangkok. He built the large Wiharn similar in style to the Wiharn of Wat Phanan Choeng in Ayutthaya. The Sukhothai style bronze Buddha, brought from Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai, was installed inside the Wiharn. The image was called Phra Toh or Phra Yai which means Big Buddha Image. The Wiharn (main hall) was completed in the reign of King Rama III. Then the Ubosot (Ordination Hall) was built along with a principal Buddha image for that hall. The temple was then named Wat Suthat Thepwararam. Later King RAma IV named the principal image inside the Wiharn Phra Phuttha Srisakkayamuni and the principal image inside the Ubosot Phra Phuttha Trilokachet.
วัดสุทัศนเทพวราราม เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอก ชนิดราชวรมหาวิหาร รัชกาลที่ ๑ ทรงโปรดเกล้า ฯ ให้สถาปนาชึ้นเป็น วัดกลางพระนคร และสร้างพระวิหารสูงใหญ่เทียบเท่าวัดพนัญเชิงของกรุงศรีอยุธยา จากนั้นทรงอัญเชิญพระพุทธรูปโลหะปางมารวิชัย ซึ่งหล่อขึ้นตั้งแต่สมัยกษัตริย์ราชวงศ์พระร่วง ที่เรียกกันว่า พระโต หรือ พระใหญ่ จากพระวิหารหลวงวัดมหาธาตุ จังหวัดสุโขทัย มาประดิษฐานไว้ ต่อมาในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๓ ทรงสร้างพระวิหารต่อจนเสร็จ พร้อมกับสร้างพระอุโบสถและหล่อพระประธานขึ้นใหม่ พระราชทานนามวัดเป็น วัดสุทัศน์เทพวราราม จากเดิมที่เรียกกันว่า วัดพระโต จนถึงสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๔ ทรงถวายพระนาม พระโต ซึ่งเป็นพระประธานในพระวิหารว่า พระพุทธศรีศากยมุนี และพระประธานในพระอุโบสถว่า พระพุทธตรีโลกเชฎฐ์
