Wat Lok Molee, วัดโลกโมฬี, is located just outside old walled Chiang Mai. The temple was founded some time in the 14th century. This temple is an old and significant site, but there is no record of the temple's founding date. Its name first appeared in historical documents in 1367 AD (B.E. 1910). The sixth Lana King of the Mengrai Dynasty invited a group of ten monks from Burma to bring their study and practice of Buddhism to his kingdom (present day Northern Thailand) and the monks resided at this temple. The abbott Phra Kaew Maung ordered a chedi built in 1527 AD (B.E. 2070) and the main hall (Wihan) built in 1545 AD (B.E. 2088). The temple houses the ashes of members of the Royal Mengrai Dynasty and it was maintained by the royal family until the end of the dynasty.
