Wat Ket Karam, วัดเกตการาม, is located in Tambon Chang Moi, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.
Wat Ket is an ancient temple located on the East side of the Mae Ping River. According to chronological records, WAt Ket was built in 1971 B.E. (Buddhist Era) (1428 A.D.) during which time (between 1954-1985 B.E. (1411-1442 A.D.)) when Phra Jao Sam Fang Kean, the king of the Min Rai dynasty was ruling the region.
Formerly, the pagoda (chedi) of Wat Ket was called "Phra Taht Ket Kaew Manee" where the relic of Lord Buddha was kept. It is believed that the pagoda representsthe original one in the topmost heaven (Daoawadueng) on earth. The spire of the pagoda was purposely made tilted in order to avoid indencency by pointing it to the one in heaven.
It is further believed that when all human beings pass away, their souls will remain at the pagoda depending on the animal signs of the year they were born. While still living, it is considered auspicious to worship the pagodas wherein dwell the same animal birth signs of their own. Wat Ket's pagoda represents the birth sign of the "Dog".
From the stone of records standing at the top of the stairs on the southern part of the main service hall (Wihan), Mun Noratha Chor, who was the ruler of Chaing Mai (between 2121-2150 B.E. (1578-1607 A.D.)) commanded a restoration of the tumbledown pagoda of Wat Ket. The restoration began in 2121 B.E. (1578 A.D.) and was finished in 2124 B.E. (1581 A.D.). He then ordered a Grand Celebration and recruited a large number of people to serve in the temple.
In the beginning of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, there were many foreigners who had different cultures and religions living around the Wat Ket area. The majority of these inhabitants were Chinese merchants
