The Kinaree (กินรี) also spelled Kinari or Ginnaree, is a mythological creature, half human, half-bird which inhabits the mythical Himapan Forest described in the epic story by that name. The human part may also be in the guise of a demon or Yaksha. The Kinaree and her male counterpart the Kinara (กินรา) or Kinnon are beautiful celestial beings much loved in Thailand and Burma. They are often called "celestial musicians," depicted with instruments which they play to spread goodness in the world. The most popular type has bird's wings and legs. Love and fidelity are also among the virtues attributed to these spirits.
