Young Hawk Owls leave the nest before they can fly. They jump to the ground, walk & hop around til they find a "leaner", a dead tree leaning against another tree. Then they climb up the leaner and then out onto the branches of the tree. At one point 3 of the 4 young HO's were in this spruce tree.
