The Coke Ovens of Cochran, Arizona

Ovens used in the production of coke for smelting gold, silver and copper from the surrounding mines. Located 15 miles east of Florence, AZ, these 25 ft. diameter, 30 ft. high ovens served many mines in the area including the Martinez Mine. The forest roads here are very rugged and change in difficulty quickly with the winter rains. There are two ways to get to the ovens: from the Martinez Canyon Road or from the Battleaxe Road. For this trip, we came in from the Battleaxe Road near Walnut Canyon.
