Gulf Fritillary

While we were there at Spring Creek Pond, Justin Roach, with the Fish and Wildlife Service stopped by to direct us to another location nearby where Wood Storks had been spotted. Like the spoonbill, I had also only seen Wood Storks one previous time in Oklahoma, in Red Slough, in southeastern McCurtain County (the same visit when I had seen the spoonbill). Following his suggestions, we drove to an area northwest of the lake and spotted a flock of perhaps 40-50 Wood Stork traveling back and forth between two ponds on either side of the road. While there, I also spotted a Gulf Fritillary butterfly.

These are beautiful orange butterflies with black markings. These butterflies occur throughout the southern United States and southward.
