The Wall divided Berlin here. Each cross contains the name of a person murdered by an East German guard as he tried to escape. Nearly 200 died.

On February 6, 1989, Chris Geoffroy, a waiter, became the last escapee killed by East German guards. The guards reportedly were decorated and paid $85. bonuses. On November 9, 1989, the wall was opened.
