Yes, it was handheld. I rarely use a tripod as it really restricts my movement. And it's not so difficult to get close to a hoverfly (or even a fly). You just have to sneak up slowly & quietly. It was focused manually. Although I do use AF as well for macro, this is definitely the most accurate method.

Wow. That's amazing. I've done quite a bit of macro work with insects, but never gotten this close to a fly. Was this handheld? If so, how did you get so close, and focus so accurately? If not, how did you set it up? Regardless, I'm impressed. (Voted.)
