This is the acclaimed “Cave of the Crystal Maiden,” featured in National Geographic Magazine. The rooms are littered with delicate Maya pottery and the crystallized remains of 14 humans. The cave system consists of a series of chambers, ending in a 300 by 50 meter Cathedral where sacrificial ceremonies once took place. Here we were exposed to the individuals that were sacrificed to the gods of the underworld! The only infrastructure is a rickety ladder leading up to the chamber of the Crystal Maiden herself, a full female skeleton that sparkles with calcite under your headlamp’s glare. An amazing experience.
