European honeybee

Mount Nelson, Tasmania

The European honeybee is amongst the most dangerous animals in Australia. There are many people with allergies to bee venom.
European honeybees take over tree hollows that might otherwise be used by friendly creatures such as parrots, bats and Mulga
snakes. Of course, we like our honey, so honeybees are encouraged to take up residence in National Parks- if you look carefully at
the flower in this picture, you can see that another bee has been there first, chewing its way into the base of the flower to get at the
nectar, bypassing the pollination mechanism altogether. In the long term, the European honeybee could upset the pollination ecology
of Australian flora- but Climate Change is probably the bigger threat.
