Common shutwing, Cordulephya pygmaea

Blue Mountains National Park

Found on the trunk of a tree at the junction of Breakfast creek and the Cox's River, Blue Mountains National Park.
Thanks to an observant entomologist, I have been informed that this is actually a dragonfly, not a damselfly.

Given the usual associations with damsels and dragons in western mythology, one might expect the damselfly to be innocent and virtuous (if letting yourself get locked up in a dragon's keep has any virtue), but damselflies are so similar to dragonflies in their habits, that should they meet a knight-in-shining-armourfly they would probably devour him with the same amount of relish (or perhaps chutney). Few of MY female friends would wait around to be rescued by some overdressed pillock on a horse if they were having trouble with a big lizard!
