I discovered these lizards ate carrion by accident when I disposed of the feral mice I caught by tossing them onto the lawn for the
magpies to find. One day I was surprised to see Eric waddling determinedly into the middle of the lawn, well away from cover, which
is something he would never normally do. He will move a couple of metres away to defecate, but he was really exposing himself to
predation this time. He picked up the dead mouse and hurried back to the shelter of the rockery. It took him quite a while to get it
down, but he managed. Since then the invading mice have been delivered to him in a safer environment.
