Sur la Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR de 1955, les lettres SLR signifient « Sport Leicht Rennen » (ou parfois « Sport Leicht-Rennen »), ce qui se traduit de l'allemand par « Sport, Légèreté, Course ». La carrosserie ultra-légère de la voiture était fabriquée en Elektron, un alliage à haute teneur en magnésium. Lorsque la voiture s'est écrasée et a pris feu, le magnésium s'est enflammé. Les secouristes ont involontairement aggravé l'incendie en l'arrosant d'eau, celle-ci agissant alors comme un catalyseur.

In the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, the letters SLR stand for "Sport Leicht Rennen" (or sometimes "Sport Leicht-Rennen"), which translates from German as "Sport, Lightness, Racing." The car's ultra-lightweight bodywork was constructed from Elektron, a high-magnesium alloy. When the car crashed and caught fire, the magnesium ignited. Rescuers inadvertently exacerbated the blaze by dousing it with water, which acted as a catalyst.
