Le premier château fut construit au Moyen Âge et détruit en 1423 après une conquête. Le second château fut édifié vers 1454, mais pris pendant la guerre de Trente Ans. Au XIXe siècle, il n'en restait plus que des ruines. Vers 1819, le prince héritier, futur roi Frédéric-Guillaume IV, passa devant ces ruines et fut profondément impressionné par le paysage et le coucher de soleil. Quelques années plus tard (1844), il souhaita la construction d'un troisième château, celui que l'on peut encore admirer aujourd'hui. ~VVVV~

The first castle was built in the Middle Ages, and was destroyed in 1423 after a conquest.
The second castle was built around 1454, but was captured during the Thirty Years’ War. By the 19th century there was only a ruin left. When the crown prince and later king Frederick William IV passed by the ruin around 1819, and was deeply impressed by the landscape and sunset scene. A few years later (1844) he wanted to have a third castle built, which is the current one. ~VVVV~
