The disastrous fire was first reported at about 1.30 a.m. on the morning of 14th June, 1978. Although two Fire Brigades from Porthmadog and Blaenau arrived on the scene, they were unable to save the Church suffering serious damage. The roof of the north side collapsed and the Church lost all its linen and much of its plate.
The P.C.C. voted to start a fund for re-building the Church and this was helped on its way by a personal gift from the then Archbishop of Wales, The Most Rev. Gwilym Williams, D.D. Donations, large and small were received from many, many sources.
St. Madryn’s was re-opened at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday 20th June, 1981 with a great concourse of Clergy and visitors.
