Alan Ladd came to the camp in 1952(not 1953) as I was posted to EDU between May and September in that year before being posted to Trieste. Most of the filming activity took place on the rocks on either side of Black Rock Sands near Portmadoc. Most of our camp were dressed as German soldiers for a few weeks, so guard duty became interesting !!!! I vaguely recognise the three guys shown in EDU picture. EDU stands for Explosive Disposal Unit and there was a similar unit in Stranraer. Their purpose was to dispose of all the surplus ammunition left over from the war and every weekday three huge piles were time detonated in the hills which gives one a clue as to the terrible wast of money. There was story that prior to my arrival ,the time detonation failed and all three piles went up together blowing out the windows in the village (Trawsfynydd)
Some short but happy memories
