Glaucous Gull first cycle
Shows long sloping forehead (probably a male) and long, nearly parallel-sided bill with relatively small gonys. Bill is brilliant pink with sharp cutoff to black tip. Black including tip is consistent with a first-year bird. Wing extension beyond the tail is relatively short (shorter than bill length). Though this bird is likely a male, small female Glaucous can be more confusing with need to separate from Iceland (strict sense: nominate and Kumlien's). First-cycle Iceland (strict sense) can show diffuse pale at the bill base, this much contrast would not be expected. However, second-cycle Iceland can have a sharply-defined black bill tip and, particularly early in the season, retain a dark iris. Size of this individual and the structural characters are important in differentiation. Important points are bill size and shape, head shape, body bulk, leg thickness, and degree of wing extension beyond the tail (relative to bill size).
