Hammamet est une des principales stations balnéaires de Tunisie. Réputée depuis la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle, la ville offre aux touristes de longues plages le long du golfe portant son nom. Elle s’appelait Pupput qui devient romaine entre 176 et179 après JC. en 1560 les Turcs arrivèrent à Hammamet pourchassés par les chrétiens (de l’Espagne et Autriche).

Hammamet the first tourist destination in Tunisia, is located in the south east of the northern peninsula of Cap Bon on the northern edge of the Gulf of Hammamet. A Roman colony in the 2nd century, walls around town were built in 13th century and medina of Hammamet was built in 15th century. It later came under Spanish and Turkish rule. In World War II, it became one of the headquarters of German general Erwin Rommel.
