These pictures were taken along the borders of the River Allier, near the town of Cournon d'Auvergne in the Clermont-Ferrand area. The river is boarded by strips of wild vegetation and pastures, making it a haven for a variety of birds. Of particular value are the 20 meter high clifs along one of the meanders, housing a large colony of sand martins (Riparia riparia), and also some couples of European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster).
