I've seen a lot of these this season, sometimes 4 at once on the eastern horizon. They really build up in the late afternoon and early evening when humidity is low and fire activity is very high. A large fire will create it's own weather cell, sometimes with lightning, adding insult to injury. This is the Zena Creek Fire.
