.....the stairs are unusually steep in angle, making the climber look down and almost walk with your hand on the steps to ensure balance and stability on ascent - why? ... looking down as you approach (or depart from) the ruler/king was an expected act of humility and subservience in those days. You should try climbing those stairs yourself - you'll breakout in a sweat.
