The Jaisamand Lake (now called the Dhebar lake) is the second-largest man-made lake in all of Asia - the lake being termed man-made as much of the water that constitutes it collects due to the construction of a dam at Jaisamand.
It is here that Maharana Jai Singh built his hunting fort - called the Hawa Mahal.
The story of its construction is as follows:
Maharana Jai Singh posed a challenge to his warriors to determine which of them was the worthiset horseman. It is said that one of them went on to jump from one bank to the other on his horse, aided by the wind, many times. To commemorate this achievement the maharana built the Hawa (Wind) Mahal at the spot.
The largest palace at Jaipur is also called the Hawa Mahal.
Another fort, with an interesting story stands across the hills (7 of them to be exact) on the Jaisamand lake shores. This palace was constructed by the Queen in anger at Maharan Pratap and it stands in magnificent defiance in direct view of the hawa Mahal.
