Phil Hebert - In Memoriam

Hebert - Phillip Joseph Andrew, CWO, MMM, CD (Retired), born September 1, 1943 in Wilkie SK, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2006 with Donna, his loving wife and best friend of 42 years by his side.

Phillip joined the military in 1960 at the age of 16. Starting as a Sapper Apprentice, he went on to enjoy a long and successful career with the Canadian Military Engineers. He retired in 1995 and although he and Donna settled in Chilliwack they spent their summers RV’ing in Edmonton AB, close to the grand-kids. He was an amazing man; a good son and brother, a loving husband and father, a proud grandfather and a loyal friend.

Predeceased by his father, Dolor (Slim) Hebert, Phillip is survived by his mother Elizabeth (Betty) Hebert of Calgary; his wife Donna of Chilliwack; his daughters Kim Hawkins-Gillingham (Randy) and Debi Hawkes (Charlie), both of Edmonton; five grand- daughters, Katie (Ray), Jessica, Ashley, Delaney & Dallas; two great-grandchildren, Aspen & Brody (born Nov 30/06); Phillip was a big brother to and survived by Gary Hebert and Jeannie Trach, both of Calgary and Faye Bystrom of Wetaskiwin AB. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.

Gary It is August 19th '07 and I have just been reading all the comments on this page, a wonderful tribute and memorial to our "big brother". It is good to know that he was so well loved and admired by his friends and community. A day doesn't go by without remembering Phil and I think about how much he is missed by Donna and all his family, and all of us, especially Mother. When I think of Phil, I remember his wonderful smile and laugh. God Bless everyone who took time to write a memory and make this page really special. Faye (Hebert) Bystrom

It's been more than a month now since my Dad passed and it still doesn't seem real, still doesn't make sense. Uncle Gary, this memorial is wonderful. Thank you so much for helping preserve all of the wonderful memories we have.

I am so sorry for your loss Gary, you brother Phillip looked like a wonderful fun loving person from the images of him. I know you must miss him dreadfully, but you write that he passed away peacefully, and that is all we can hope for, to be at peace when we leave here to go to a better place.

Gary what a wonderful way to honour Phil's life. It is still hard to think that Phil is gone; he was such a big influence in my life. He taught us all so much about life and was always a gentleman. He had a big smile, and a bigger heart; he was highly respected by all who knew him. A family man from the word go who would do anything to protect them, and his grandchildren were the loves of his life. He had many friends of whom he always had time for and we all appreciated Phil and Donna’s company. Phil always had a way of making you feel that you were the most important person in the world. We miss him so much; we were so much wanting for Phil and Donna to visit us in Comox this summer. There was so much we wanted to say to Phil, we wanted to thank him for everything he has done for us over the years, thank him for his leadership, his guidance, and most of all his friendship. We will never forget Phil, what a great man taken from us all far to soon. Wherever Phil is you can bet that he looking down upon us all with that big smile and he would say carry on, live your life and I love you all. Donna, you must know that we are here for you, and that Teanna and I have memories of Phil that will last a lifetime. No words can express how we feel but that we lost a great friend. Danna and the Hebert family our sincere condolences to you all.

Gary The gallery of pictures of Phillip brought back many good memories for Don, as he talked about growing up with Phillip, being together at functions for Canadian Pacific Railway workers in Wilkie, and being teenagers in the 50's and 60's and doing all the "typical" teenage activities! For both of us, our Christmas greetings kept us informed of what was happening with Phillip, Donna and family. My first time meeting Phillip and Donna in Calgary in 1967 - I just remember how tall Phillip was and later learned this gentle giant was a very special person with a most wonderful wife and two beautiful daughters! Thanks for the memories and our deepest sympathy to all the family.

Gary I was shocked to hear Phil had past away took a couple of days to sort of get over it , you never get over them to many but I still have all the memories you've said it just right my condolences to all the family bruce (clurg)

12-year-old Slim - Oh, I recall this tall boy from my childhood. We had a 'gang of us' and Slim was a lot younger, but he was tall and so he seemed to fit in with us 'the older kids'! - and fit in he did. My memory always leads me back to him kind of looking out for me although I was a tomboy so to speak. If I couldn't run or climb fast enough he was always there to pick me up and drag me over the fence when we were out raiding gardens. When we played gate-tag at the stockyards he had the longest arms and legs and I do recall him always rescuing me if I was caught in a corner - it was best to follow him. God, we had a lot of funs as kids - up to no good all the time. I remember putting sticks under all the steering wheels at Nelson's Garage so all the horns would blow at the same time. Betty, I'm sure you didn't know what he was up to when he left the house but, whatever it was, 12-year old Slim's gentleness was always there. Although we have lost this gentle tall man, I will never lose the memories. - Maureen Young (Wagner)

Gary Being from Saskatchewan (Limerick) the gallery for Phil brings back many fond memories of growing up in the prairie atmosphere. Phil was very much a prairie boy, he & Donna became very good friends in 1978, Lil and I will miss him. Your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I remember going to a swim meet in North Battleford. Phillip decided that he would enter the two length breast stroke race. Well Phillip dove in and swam the entire two lengths underwater to win the race. We were all amazed that he was faster underwater than the other swimmers were on the surface. Go fiqure. Myron Zabol
