The “Keeper of the Plains” statue‚ which was originally installed on a perch overlooking the Arkansas
River in 1974‚ had fallen into disrepair over the years. After a six-month restoration project
following the removal of the statue from its pedestal‚ it was reinstalled in March 2006 – albeit
30 feet higher than before.
The impressive sculpture is the work of American Indian Blackbear Bosin. Interestingly‚ workers
originally installed “Keeper of the Plains” in the wrong direction‚ facing southeast. It now
points directly to the east‚ facing the sunrise‚ which is what Bosin had in mind.
