Return to Pleasure Beach 2006

Its now 2006, and me myself and I this time went to pleasure beach to see the ruins again. Here it is 4 years later, and its still hasn't changed much. The area appears to be more overgrown with vegitation than in 2002. I did notice about 3 beach cottages still being occupied even after being evicted by the Stratford Town council and their politics years ago. While on my walk I did find 2 hawk nests atop the dead telephone poles. They are very protective of thier nest beacuse one swooped down over my head as I approached the pole. The area is still really unaccesible unless by boat or a long walk from Long Beach in Stratford across the dunes. The bridge connecting Pleasure Beach to the mainland is still destroyed from a fire many many years ago. The city of Bridgeport and the Town of Stratford have no immediate desire at this time to repair the bridge.

go in one of the cottages and pic up the phone. its very wierd what happens. also you should go to the movie theatre and take pictures of inside there

My family owned one of the cottages - in fact, you have a picture of our cottage with the front door hanging off - from your 2002 trip - what a SHAME - we had such beautiful memories there as kids. We know that vandals have absolutely destroyed many of the cottages - and it saddens me so to see Pleasure Beach Cottages that way. Everyone loved being there - it was a wonderful community, in a beautiful tucked away place. I can't believe this place is a victim of the Stratford Town council....My brother has been up to see the cottage - by boat, but my mom can't even bear to see it in the condition the vandals have left it....I'm sure she would want to remember better days. Shame on Stratford.........Shame on Bridgeport....

ohh and one more thing, i noticed in your picture that the "island taxi" is in the cottage section of the island, yesterday when we went it was all the way down by the bridge, that was another weird thing we realized when we took a look at ur pictures.

me and 2 of my friends went down to explore pleasure yesterday and got some really cool pics. were amazed by it. were so puzzled at some of the things that were left behind wich has brought up some questions among us. Why did people have to get off the island so fast that they left every little things in there cottages including dishes and cups etc.. we have also done some research and havent found much wich also makes us wonder why after the fire in '96 there was no police investigation to why it burned and why stratford and bridgeport hate the place so much. it just very weird how it seems that everyone was forced to get up and leave in what looks like such a short notice. if anyone has and info that would be awsome!

Gary, Thanks for sharing the pics they bring back so many memories when I was a kid. One favor though should you ever get back there and if the pier is still there could you get a few shots of that as well?

I too used to spend summers growing up at Pleasure Beach at my grandmother's cottage. I miss it a lot, and am saddened that the end of the road for Pleasure Beach is coming up in just a few months. Do you have any of the cottages themselves this time around? I found a couple of my grandmother's in your 2002 collection. Thanks for the pictures.

I spent many summers (from 1942 to the time the bridge burned) at Pleasure Beach. My family owned a cottage there and did much to try and preserve the beach. We were not "rich" greedy people. We love Pleasure Beach and did all in our power to treat it as a treasure. The cottage owners built bulkheads, repaired the road, paid taxes and lease money to Stratford, paid for their own garbage and trash collection among other expenses and asked for and received little or no services from Stratford. SInce the bridge burned Stratford has refused to deal with the owners acting as if we were poachers. I, and my family are really saddened and disappointed by the fact that Stratford has refused to sell the land to us or to the WIldlife group but has chosen to ignore such a valueable resource. I hope that someone in Stratford (in their infinite wisdom) does something useful with this beautiful area and that some "pay to play" group doesn't gain the exclusive rights to build a casino or some other such venue. I love Pleasure Beach and it breaks my heart to think it is going to be destroyed by Stratford's greed.
