Cinereous Vulture

This Cinerous (or Eurasian Black-) Vulture was first discovered near Beers, Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands on 16 March 2005. Because of the early time of the year rumours were that it would involve a bird from captivity. Hence, the next morning only a handful of people, including me, went to take a look for the bird. It showed well at close range and because of it's blue plastic ring and four white-stained primaries, the identity of the bird was quickly affirmed. It appeared that it was picked-up alive but poisoned in the Extremadura, Spain, on 2 May 2003. Suddenly, the bird named 'Carmen' was transported to Mallorca, Spain, on 15 July 2003 and then to Baronnies, Rhne-Alpes, France, on 7 April 2004. Here it was released back in the wild on 2 february 2005, after which it disappeared. After its stay near Beers, The Netherlands, on 16-17 March 2005, having travelled a mere 1000 Kilometres (probably during the days before on southerly winds), it found itself a suitable place in the large Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve, where it was rediscovered on 21 March 2005. Here it survived surprisingly well, feeding on the abundant carcassess of large herbivors present in the area. The bird now became a popular attraction and during the summer many people took the opportunity to watch it. In addition, Staatsbosbeheer, the owner of the reserve, took the bird's presence as a free opportunity to defend its policy regarding large herbivores in the national media. Unfortunately, on 15 August 2005 the bird died after being hit by a train near the edge of the reserve. On 21 August it was dissected publicly at the National Museum for National History at Leiden. The skin remains in their collection now. It was the third time in history a (presumed) wild Cinerous Vulture turned up in The Netherlands.
