Norfolk Potests to Bush Visit

Peace activists organized protests outside of Chrysler Hall in Norfolk, Virginia as president Bush gave a speech to mostly military personnel on the War on Terrorism. Attendance to the event was by invite only. Most military personnel were bused in early (around 7AM) in preparation for Bush’s visit.

Approximately 60 protesters positioned themselves at several different locations surrounding Chrysler Hall. A couple of early bird protesters, including William Reyes, were interviewed live by a local Norfolk station (Channel 3) for the morning news. William is a Navy veteran who was stationed in Iraq.

As the morning progressed, protesters consolidated their position to a designated location at the entrance to the underground garage to Chrysler Hall, where it was believed that President Bush’s motorcade would arrive. The motorcade arrived promptly at 10AM to demonstrators chanting “Bush lied … people died”.

Tom Palumbo, a thirteen year veteran and member of Veterans for Peace, requested and received a ticket to attend the event. Upon President Bush’s second reference to the "war on terrorism", Tom stood up and shouted, "Mr. President … war is terrorism … torture is terrorism. Do the right thing and resign now!" At which point Tom opened his button-down shirt to reveal a "DUMP BUSH” tee shirt with “FIRE THE LIAR!” on the back. Tom was promptly removed by security personnel.

Tom Palumbo joined protesters at the entrance to the underground garage around 10:40PM. A number of media personnel, who had also congregated at this location, interviewed Tom as well as Charlie Anderson, an Iraq War Veteran and Southeast Regional Coordinator for Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). Two, young Navy personnel who had attended President Bush’s speech came up to ask questions of the protesters. They were putting together a report of the event for their shipmates and wanted to include elements of the protest outside of Chrysler Hall.

Protesters largely remained at the garage entrance until the President’s motorcade reemerged at precisely 11AM. Some activists continued to “man” the street corners with protest signs until shortly after 12PM, when they were picked up as a backdrop for another local TV station during their noon hour news report. Response from the street was surprisingly positive toward the protesters, given the location in the heart of one of the world's largest military towns.
