The owl wasn't afraid of us. We were there for quite some time taking pictures and pointing it out to passersby. It was still there when we left. It was also at the exact same place when I went back the next day. Then I took a short bike ride and came back 15 minutes later and it was gone. I don't know what could have scared it away.
