Luxor temple

The Luxor temple stands in the heart of the modern town of Luxor in Upper Egypt. Its position is unusual as its axis runs parallel to the Nile. Most ancient Egyptian temples follow the divine axis and thus have their entrances facing the river. The temple of Luxor is aligned towards the Karnak temples, to which it was connected via an avenue of sphinxes. The temple was dedicated to the Theban Triad of Amun, Mut and Khonsu and was founded in the 18th dynasty by Amenhotep III. It later played a part in the histories of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Christian and Islamic cultures. The entrance to the temple of Luxor is located on the busy Corniche, that runs between the river and the temple.
