The Spruce Goose was designed and constructed in response to a US request for a heavy lift aircraft. Hughes Aircraft constructed the H4 Hercules from timber due to a shortage of normal aircraft materials. It flew only briefly in 1947.
I saw this in its Los Angeles location but reference to Google indicates it has been subsequently rehoused and on display in an Oregon USA.
