Galleria Hong Kong

Over and beyond his working life Robaire has often visited Hong Kong. Indeed it is one of six cities he really liked visiting, the others London, Geneva, Paris, Washington and New York.
There are a few others. It is because of a lifetime interest in photography that he travelled to Hong Kong in October 1993 to attend Image Hong Kong and there is also reference
elsewhere in Rusticana. After all these years our Leader became aware that there were aspects of this event that may interest others of our viewers who themselves have enjoyed
visiting this exotic place. Naturellement it fell to his limping old colleague to comply.

Although this occurred eighteen years ago it is important that full attribution be given to the organisers of what
Robaire regarded as a very impressive gathering of likeminded folk from Master-class to amateurs, nearly 300 if memory is reliable.

To acknowledge the organisers we are adding four scans, being the cover, the introduction and introductions to two Master Photographers who were of real interest to our traveller:
Image Hong Kong…Aspects of Photography and a
Foreword by
Eugene C Sullivan, Executive Director Hong Kong Tourist Association which, with
Kodak (Far East) Ltd., presented the event 1993

Amongst the six Master Photographers who spoke over this meet were two who, for very different reasons, were of interest to Robaire. First was the Australian speaker very well known
in and beyond OZ by his work…the late David Moore whose image has long been in Galleria. David is well known and his memory is widely respected for his major works in and on OZ.
Sadly it was only during the four or five days that they met and went on photo shoots on the junk etc., that their friendship developed. It was only after David’s death that Robaire learnt
David had been the first patron of Primrose Park Photography, a very special Sydney institution.
Several members will be found in our Other Mates Gallery, together with our In Mates, Wazza and Robaire.

The shot of David on the junk adorns the Primrose darkroom, still well used.

The other photographer who Robaire came to admire was the Frenchman Jean-Philippe Jourdrin and it is because of some dodgy available light pics Robaire took of his lecture that our
Leader persuaded Robaire to create this gallery. Jean-Phillippe was a rarity in 1993. His speciality was black and white images of people who could be best described as living a very hard
life, whether in their work or maybe from disabilities.

He would often visit many times to gain a subject’s confidence before taking his (then) beloved Hasselblad along. The few hand-held, no flash fuzzy images below will give you some idea
of the human condition that Jean-Philippe was then trying to record. Google has revealed that Jean-Phillippe is, not surprisingly, now more widely known and well may he be for we are
talking about an event now nearly eighteen years old. But for those present at his lecture, memories of his pics would remain still. These then are the Hong Kong pictures of that time and
earlier, back to a 1965ish panorama of the Island as it was then..

We hope they will be of interest.
