Ontake-san

Ontake-san at 10,049 feet (3,063 m) is a volcano that is second only to Mount Fuji in elevation in Japan. It is in the Kiso area of Nagano-ken, where we lived in 1994 – 1995. Thousands of pilgrims from numerous Shinto and Buddhist sects climb it each year. Between 1979 – 1980, there were numerous eruptions, most recently in 2014. There are five crater lakes near the summit, with Ni-no-ike being the highest, and the highest lake in Japan for that matter.
