The Mekong River arrives in Thailand along its northern tri-border with Laos and Myanmar, veers into the heart of northern Laos, and remerges further south to continue to form a natural border with Thailand before disappearing into Cambodia. The people on both sides of the river speak languages that are by and large Lao, and are in other ways culturally very similar.
