John, Since you suggested some mistical atmosphere in the picture I though that you're right aboutnot adding details to the player. On the other hand I just loved the colors of the background rock and thought it might be good idea even emphasys them more. I also wanted two have foreground rocks a bit lighter to add drama with silhuete ficure of the player. Here is what I've done. I selected all foreground rocks and created new layer. I changed blending mode to "screen", which made the rocks twice brighter ad changed opacxity to 70% to correct it a bit back. Then on top of the layer sandwich I created levels adjastment level and moved gumma to 0.85, which made entire image a bit darker. Since background rock was already brighter the picture kind of become darker, whithout making foreground rocks completely black. On top of this I used a bit of saturation to pop foreground rock colors and curves, to make them more contrast.

This is a bit like the way Michel T.did .The player here a shade too dark and rocks in foreground(granite? ) with noise or structure of the rock..
Blending Michael's and Michel's solution might be perfect.
